Camp Day at Tim Horton’s
My experience as a Camp Day Volunteer
I had to write this, as I think volunteering for Tim Hortons Camp Day was one of those days that opened my eyes. I had only planned on being there until 10:00 that day, but I thought why not go for a whole day. I only took one small break (big mistake) and worked on through the lunch and the after school crowd. Oh yes, that is something else I would like to mention, the high school was across the road. So you can only imagine how crowded this Tim Horton’s was with the students, teachers, plus the senior crowd and local businesses ordering their morning coffee, lunch and then the 3:00 rush. Never will I complain at a Tim Horton’s again!! They really work for their money, it is hard work and there is always a never ending stream of coffee craving customers lining up at the door. It is very hard to keep up with all the customers orders, but I learned that you need a really strong team, because it is team work. If all kids took a job at Tim Hortons while they were at school I am sure they would have a better understanding of team work, and how to better appreciate the customer service/fast food industry. You might think it is just pouring coffee, but its hundreds of coffees a day, you have to constantly keep up with making new pots, re stocking the hundreds of coffee cups you go through in a day, filling up big bags of creamers, and that ice cap machine….well that is another story. I had nightmares thinking of what I would do with that one. But it was pretty tame and people seem to be happy with the ice capps that I made.
Between making pots of coffee and filling coffee orders, I got to man the games. They were a lot of fun and a lot of people just wanted to donate. They won donuts and cookies and said to give them to other people. The air was full of very charitable people, and they donated in every way that they could.
I could not even write how hard it was that day. I was like every other customer who stood in line. My goal was to get my food and get it fast. I never realized just how much it took to run a Tim Hortons, all the duties, staffing, cleaning etc. I can only tell you that it took me 2 days to get over it. I think I should have taken the breaks that they offered but I thought I didn’t need them. Boy was I wrong. It was a very long day, I was exhausted but it was for a great cause and that is what it was all about at the end of the day. I do not have the final totals for that store, but I am sure they did very well. Until next year…….
